bypass mode or remote start mode

which mode should module be in before installing?

You want to set up the bypass first, then set up the remote starter.

 

Once that is done you can then install it and program it in the vehicle.

when switched to remote start mode I can't do anything. it says device is disconnected.

If you have an EVO-ALL, there is no Remote Start side. Everything is setup under the bypass section. Even though you may be using the unit as a remote starter, the module itself is a bypass harware.
